Windows 95/98 Update Info
Note: You may want to print this page out so you can easily follow
these step-by-step instructions.
All Users:
- Click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel
- Double Click Network
- If you see Dial-Up Adapter listed, Go to step 4. Otherwise,
continue.
- Click Add
- Select Adapter and click Add
- Find Microsoft in the Manufacturers box and click on it
- Click Dial-Up Adapter in the Network adapters box
- Click OK
- If you see TCP/IP listed in the box, Go to step 5. Otherwise,
continue.
- Click Add
- Select Protocol and click Add
- Find Microsoft in the Manufacturers list and click on it
- Click on TCP/IP in the Network protocols box
- Click OK
- Click on Dial-Up Adapter and click Properties
- Click on the Bindings tab
- TCP/IP should be the only thing checked, uncheck everything else
- Click OK
- Click OK
- If it asks for the Windows CD, insert it.
- Click Yes when it asks to reboot the computer
- Double click on My Computer
- Double Click on the Dial-Up Networking Folder.
- Double Click on Make New Connection.
- Enter Computerlynx Network as the name.
- Make sure that the correct modem is selected under Select a Device.
- Enter the phone number that we gave you in the phone number box (if we didn't give you a
phone number please call us to get it)
- Click Finish
- Right click on the Computerlynx icon and select properties
- Click on the Server Types tab or button.
- Log On To Network should NOT be checked
- Enable software compression SHOULD be checked
- Require encrypted password should NOT be checked
- TCP/IP should be the ONLY Allowed Network Protocol checked, NetBEUI and IPX/SPX should
NOT be checked.
- Click on the TCP/IP Settings button.
- Server Assigned IP Address should be checked at the top.
- Specify name server addresses should be checked
- Put 208.28.151.20 in the Primary DNS Server box
- Put 208.28.151.27 in the Secondary DNS Server box
- Double click on the Computerlynx connection.
- Fill in your user name and password. If you want your password to be saved, click Save
Password.
- Click Connect. This will connect you to our servers!
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 Users:
- Right Click The Internet icon.
- Select Properties from the menu that appears.
- Click the Navigation tab.
- Make sure that the Page text box indicates Start Page.
- If it does not, click on the drop-down button to the right of the box and select Start
Page from the list.
- Modify the information in the Address text box so that it looks like this:
- http://www.computerlynx.net
- Click OK to confirm the changes youve made to The Internet Properties.
- Double-click the The Internet icon and connect to the Internet.
- Click Go on the Internet Explorer menu.
- Select Read Mail. This will start Internet Mail.
- Click Mail from the Internet Mail menu and choose Options.
- Click the Server tab.
- Modify the information in the Email Address text box so it looks like this:
- <your e-mail address>@cplx.net
- Modify the information in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) text box so it look like this:
- mail.computerlynx.net
- Modify the information in the Incoming Mail (POP3) text box so it looks like
this:
- mail.computerlynx.net
- Click the Advanced Settings button.
- Modify the information in the Reply To text box so it looks like this:
- <your e-mail address>@cplx.net
- Click OK to exit Advanced Settings and confirm the changes youve made.
- Click OK to exit Internet Mail Options and confirm the changes youve made.
- Close Internet Mail.
- Click Go on the Internet Explorer menu.
- Select Read News. This will start Internet News.
- Click News from the Internet News menu and choose Options.
- Click the Server tab.
- In the News servers box, click on news.computerlynx.net and click on the Properties
button.
- Modify the News Server Name: box to say the following:
- news.computerlynx.net
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
- Close Internet News.
- Exit Internet Explorer and Log off the Internet. When you reconnect to the Internet, all
the changes youve made will take effect.
Internet Explorer 4 Users:
- Right Click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop
- Select Properties
- Click on the General tab
- In the Home Page area to the right of Address:, type the following in the box:
- http://www.computerlynx.net
- Click on the Connection tab
- In the Connection area, make sure that Connect to the Internet using a modem is selected
- Click on the Settings button to the right of Connect to the Internet using a modem
- Click on the box underneath of Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection and
select Computerlynx.
- Click OK
- Click OK
- Double click on the Internet Explorer icon and connect
- Click on the icon labeled Mail in the icon bar
- Select Read Mail
- If the Internet Connection Wizard or a similar wizard appears, go to the New Users section
- Otherwise, click Tools and select Accounts
- Click on the Mail tab
- Click on the account listed and click the Properties button
- Click on the General tab
- Type Computerlynx Mail in the Mail Account box
- Type your name or whatever you want to appear in e-mails in the Name: box
- If you are with an organization or business and want that to appear in your emails, type it in
the Organization: box
- Type your logon name@cplx.net in the E-Mail Address: box
- Make sure that the Reply address: box is blank, unless you want people's replies to go to
another email address
- Make sure that Include this account when doing a full Send and Receive is checked
- Click on the Servers tab
- Type mail.computerlynx.net into the Outgoing Mail (SMTP): box
- Type mail.computerlynx.net into the Incoming Mail (POP3): box
- Make sure that Log On using is selected
- Type your Computerlynx logon name in the Account Name: box
- Type your password in the Password: box
- Click the Connection tab
- Make sure that Connect using my phone line is selected
- Select Computerlynx under Use the Following Dial-Up Networking connection
- Click OK
- If you can, click on the Set As Default button
- Click on the News tab
- If nothing is listed, click Add and select News.
- Go to the New Users section
- Otherwise, click on the account listed and select Properties
- Click on the General tab
- Type Computerlynx News into the News Account box
- Fill out the rest of this screen identical to how you filled out the mail screen that looked
like this
- Click on the Server tab
- Type news.computerlynx.net into the Server Name: box
- Make sure that This server requires me to log on is UNchecked
- Click on the Connection tab
- Fill this screen in the same way that you filled the Mail Connection screen in
- Click OK
- Click Close
- Close Outlook Express and reload it
Netscape Navigator 3 users:
- Load Netscape Navigator
- Click on Options in the menu bar, then click on General Preferences...
- Click on the Appearance tab.
- In the Startup box, where it says Browser Starts With:
- Make sure that Home Page Location: is checked
- Modify the box below Home Page Location to say the following:
- http://www.computerlynx.net
- Click OK.
- Click Options on the menu bar, then click Mail & News Preferences...
- Click on the Servers tab.
- Modify the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server text box to say the following:
- mail.computerlynx.net
- Modify the Incoming Mail (POP3) Server text box to say the following:
- mail.computerlynx.net
- Modify the News (NNTP) Server text box to say the following:
- news.computerlynx.net
- Click on the Identity Tab.
- Modify the Your Email text box to say the following:
- <your e-mail name>@cplx.net
- Modify the Reply-to Address text box to say the following:
- <your e-mail name>@cplx.net
- Click OK.
- Close Netscape Navigator and reload. These changes will now take effect.
Netscape Communicator 4 Users:
- Load Netscape Communicator
- Click Edit on the menu bar, then click Preferences...
- Under Category:, click Navigator.
- Modify the Location: text box in the Home Page area to say the following:
- http://www.computerlynx.net
- Under Category:, if there is a plus sign to the left of Mail & Groups, click it.
- Click on Identity under Mail & Groups.
- Modify the E-Mail Address box to say the following:
- <your e-mail name>@cplx.net
- If there is anything in the Reply-To Address text box (if the box is blank, leave it
that way), modify it to say the following:
- <your e-mail name>@cplx.net
- Click on Mail Server under Mail & Groups.
- Modify the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server text box to say the following:
- mail.computerlynx.net
- Modify the Incoming Mail Server text box to say the following:
- mail.computerlynx.net
- Click on Groups Server under Mail & Groups.
- Modify the Discussion Groups (News) Server to say the following:
- news.computerlynx.net
- Click OK.
- Close and reload Netscape Communicator. These changes will now take effect.
