Windows 95/98 Update Info

All Users:

  1. Click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel
  2. Double Click Network
  3. If you see Dial-Up Adapter listed, Go to step 4. Otherwise, continue.
    1. Click Add
    2. Select Adapter and click Add
    3. Find Microsoft in the Manufacturers box and click on it
    4. Click Dial-Up Adapter in the Network adapters box
    5. Click OK
  4. If you see TCP/IP listed in the box, Go to step 5. Otherwise, continue.
    1. Click Add
    2. Select Protocol and click Add
    3. Find Microsoft in the Manufacturers list and click on it
    4. Click on TCP/IP in the Network protocols box
    5. Click OK
  5. Click on Dial-Up Adapter and click Properties
  6. Click on the Bindings tab
  7. TCP/IP should be the only thing checked, uncheck everything else
  8. Click OK
  9. Click OK
  10. If it asks for the Windows CD, insert it.
  11. Click Yes when it asks to reboot the computer
  12. Double click on My Computer
  13. Double Click on the Dial-Up Networking Folder.
  14. Double Click on Make New Connection.
  15. Enter Computerlynx Network as the name.
  16. Make sure that the correct modem is selected under Select a Device.
  17. Enter the phone number that we gave you in the phone number box (if we didn't give you a phone number please call us to get it)
  18. Click Finish
  19. Right click on the Computerlynx icon and select properties
  20. Click on the Server Types tab or button.
  21. Log On To Network should NOT be checked
  22. Enable software compression SHOULD be checked
  23. Require encrypted password should NOT be checked
  24. TCP/IP should be the ONLY Allowed Network Protocol checked, NetBEUI and IPX/SPX should NOT be checked.
  25. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button.
  26. Server Assigned IP Address should be checked at the top.
  27. Specify name server addresses should be checked
  28. Put 208.28.151.20 in the Primary DNS Server box
  29. Put 208.28.151.27 in the Secondary DNS Server box
  30. Double click on the Computerlynx connection.
  31. Fill in your user name and password. If you want your password to be saved, click Save Password.
  32. Click Connect. This will connect you to our servers!

Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 Users:

  1. Right Click The Internet icon.
    1. Select Properties from the menu that appears.
      1. Click the Navigation tab.
        1. Make sure that the Page text box indicates Start Page.
          1. If it does not, click on the drop-down button to the right of the box and select Start Page from the list.
        2. Modify the information in the Address text box so that it looks like this:
          1. http://www.computerlynx.net
    2. Click OK to confirm the changes you’ve made to The Internet Properties.
  2. Double-click the The Internet icon and connect to the Internet.
    1. Click Go on the Internet Explorer menu.
      1. Select Read Mail. This will start Internet Mail.
        1. Click Mail from the Internet Mail menu and choose Options.
        2. Click the Server tab.
          1. Modify the information in the Email Address text box so it looks like this:
            1. <your e-mail address>@cplx.net
          2. Modify the information in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) text box so it look like this:
            1. mail.computerlynx.net
          3. Modify the information in the Incoming Mail (POP3) text box so it looks like this:
            1. mail.computerlynx.net
          4. Click the Advanced Settings button.
            1. Modify the information in the Reply To text box so it looks like this:
              1. <your e-mail address>@cplx.net
          5. Click OK to exit Advanced Settings and confirm the changes you’ve made.
        3. Click OK to exit Internet Mail Options and confirm the changes you’ve made.
      2. Close Internet Mail.
    2. Click Go on the Internet Explorer menu.
      1. Select Read News. This will start Internet News.
        1. Click News from the Internet News menu and choose Options.
          1. Click the Server tab.
            1. In the News servers box, click on news.computerlynx.net and click on the Properties button.
              1. Modify the News Server Name: box to say the following:
                1. news.computerlynx.net
              2. Click OK.
            2. Click OK.
        2. Close Internet News.
  3. Exit Internet Explorer and Log off the Internet. When you reconnect to the Internet, all the changes you’ve made will take effect.

Internet Explorer 4 Users:

  1. Right Click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop
    1. Select Properties
      1. Click on the General tab
        1. In the Home Page area to the right of Address:, type the following in the box:
          1. http://www.computerlynx.net
      2. Click on the Connection tab
        1. In the Connection area, make sure that Connect to the Internet using a modem is selected
        2. Click on the Settings button to the right of Connect to the Internet using a modem
          1. Click on the box underneath of Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection and select Computerlynx.
        3. Click OK
      3. Click OK
  2. Double click on the Internet Explorer icon and connect
    1. Click on the icon labeled Mail in the icon bar
      1. Select Read Mail
        1. If the Internet Connection Wizard or a similar wizard appears, go to the New Users section
        2. Otherwise, click Tools and select Accounts
          1. Click on the Mail tab
            1. Click on the account listed and click the Properties button
              1. Click on the General tab
                1. Type Computerlynx Mail in the Mail Account box
                2. Type your name or whatever you want to appear in e-mails in the Name: box
                3. If you are with an organization or business and want that to appear in your emails, type it in the Organization: box
                4. Type your logon name@cplx.net in the E-Mail Address: box
                5. Make sure that the Reply address: box is blank, unless you want people's replies to go to another email address
                6. Make sure that Include this account when doing a full Send and Receive is checked
              2. Click on the Servers tab
                1. Type mail.computerlynx.net into the Outgoing Mail (SMTP): box
                2. Type mail.computerlynx.net into the Incoming Mail (POP3): box
                3. Make sure that Log On using is selected
                4. Type your Computerlynx logon name in the Account Name: box
                5. Type your password in the Password: box
              3. Click the Connection tab
                1. Make sure that Connect using my phone line is selected
                2. Select Computerlynx under Use the Following Dial-Up Networking connection
              4. Click OK
            2. If you can, click on the Set As Default button
          2. Click on the News tab
            1. If nothing is listed, click Add and select News.
              1. Go to the New Users section
            2. Otherwise, click on the account listed and select Properties
              1. Click on the General tab
                1. Type Computerlynx News into the News Account box
                2. Fill out the rest of this screen identical to how you filled out the mail screen that looked like this
              2. Click on the Server tab
                1. Type news.computerlynx.net into the Server Name: box
                2. Make sure that This server requires me to log on is UNchecked
              3. Click on the Connection tab
                1. Fill this screen in the same way that you filled the Mail Connection screen in
              4. Click OK
          3. Click Close
        3. Close Outlook Express and reload it

Netscape Navigator 3 users:

  1. Load Netscape Navigator
    1. Click on Options in the menu bar, then click on General Preferences...
      1. Click on the Appearance tab.
        1. In the Startup box, where it says Browser Starts With:
          1. Make sure that Home Page Location: is checked
          2. Modify the box below Home Page Location to say the following:
            1. http://www.computerlynx.net
      2. Click OK.
    2. Click Options on the menu bar, then click Mail & News Preferences...
      1. Click on the Servers tab.
        1. Modify the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server text box to say the following:
          1. mail.computerlynx.net
        2. Modify the Incoming Mail (POP3) Server text box to say the following:
          1. mail.computerlynx.net
        3. Modify the News (NNTP) Server text box to say the following:
          1. news.computerlynx.net
      2. Click on the Identity Tab.
        1. Modify the Your Email text box to say the following:
          1. <your e-mail name>@cplx.net
        2. Modify the Reply-to Address text box to say the following:
          1. <your e-mail name>@cplx.net
      3. Click OK.
  2. Close Netscape Navigator and reload. These changes will now take effect.

Netscape Communicator 4 Users:

  1. Load Netscape Communicator
    1. Click Edit on the menu bar, then click Preferences...
      1. Under Category:, click Navigator.
        1. Modify the Location: text box in the Home Page area to say the following:
          1. http://www.computerlynx.net
      2. Under Category:, if there is a plus sign to the left of Mail & Groups, click it.
        1. Click on Identity under Mail & Groups.
          1. Modify the E-Mail Address box to say the following:
            1. <your e-mail name>@cplx.net
          2. If there is anything in the Reply-To Address text box (if the box is blank, leave it that way), modify it to say the following:
            1. <your e-mail name>@cplx.net
        2. Click on Mail Server under Mail & Groups.
          1. Modify the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server text box to say the following:
            1. mail.computerlynx.net
          2. Modify the Incoming Mail Server text box to say the following:
            1. mail.computerlynx.net
        3. Click on Groups Server under Mail & Groups.
          1. Modify the Discussion Groups (News) Server to say the following:
            1. news.computerlynx.net
      3. Click OK.
  2. Close and reload Netscape Communicator. These changes will now take effect.
